PopBlock+

What did you expect from PopBlock+ when you downloaded it onto your Google Chrome browser? Did you expect it to detect and block advertisements? That is not an unreasonable expectation, given that that is what is officially promised by Search Dimension Inc. (the creator) at the Chrome Web Store. The installer used to exist at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/popblock%20/fjdbdncjdpejlofndcobhldkeicnignc, and any Chrome user could install it for free. Well, by the time we were done researching the extension, this installer was already taken down, but it is always possible that the creator of the PUP (potentially unwanted program) could set up a new download page on the platform. Also, they might set up websites and utilize third-party downloaders to promote it. Since we do not know how exactly this extension entered your system, we recommend that all users scan their systems. Hopefully, you are not warned about the existence of other threats that must be deleted. In either case, in this report, we show how to remove PopBlock+.

PopBlock+ is identified as a potentially unwanted program for a very simple reason – it shows ads. Yes, a tool that is meant to block advertisements, is actually capable of delivering them. To be fair, the extension only promises to block and remove pop-up ads and redirects, but we are sure that most people will expect it to block all kinds of ads. Well, that is not how the PUP works. Is this some secret that users can discover only after they install the extension? Not at all. In fact, if Chrome users were in the habit of checking the privacy policies, they would be better informed about how the services and tools they are interested in actually work. The Privacy Policy of PopBlock+ is introduced at popblockplus.com/privacy_policy. The most important statement declares this: “We may allow third-parties, including our authorized service providers, advertising companies, and ad networks, to display advertisements or place ad tags or beacons on or via Search Dimension Services.” This is why we believe that you will want to delete the extension.

According to the Privacy Policy, PopBlock+ collects information about users and also allows third parties to do the same using their own technologies. The PUP also can share information with Authorized service providers, Advertisers and Ad Networks, and Business partners. Due to this, the unwanted extension is not the only thing that you need to think about. You also need to think about the web cookies that store data. Luckily, it is fairly easy to delete them. So, now comes the time to decide whether you want to delete PopBlock+ itself. If we have helped you realize that this extension is not exactly useful or trustworthy, we are sure that you want to get rid of it, but before you take on this task, we strongly recommend that you scan your operating system. It will only take a few minutes for a legitimate malware scanner to examine your system, and once it is done, you will know if you only need to remove the PUP, or if you also need to research and eliminate other unwanted extensions/programs or, perhaps, serious threats.

You do not need to possess great experience and skill to delete PopBlock+ successfully. This extension can be found in the ‘Extensions’ menu just like any other active one, and you can easily remove it from there. The guide below should make the elimination process easy because it shows how to get rid of unwanted add-ons and also clear browsing data (to delete cookies) step by step. If you have questions regarding the guide, do not hesitate to use the comments section to post your questions. Of course, even if you can erase all existing PUPs or threats manually, it might be much harder to secure your operating system, and that is why it is a good idea to consider the installation of anti-malware software as well. This software can reliably secure your system and automatically erase all threats, and once you have this taken care of, you can select a more reliable ad-blocker to protect you against unwanted advertisements. Of course, you must choose wisely.
