Danger level 3
Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

Access TV Streaming

Sometimes it’s best to look for something yourself, rather than relying on a third-party application. For instance, you might want to have multiple video streaming sites at your fingertips, and you might think that something like Access TV Streaming should be enough to provide you with the latest and the best streaming sites. On the other hand, security experts say that this app is a potentially unwanted program. It might not be an immediate system security threat, but it could easily redirect you to dangerous websites, and that’s something no one wants. Hence, the sooner you remove Access TV Streaming, the better.

Now, if we were to take a look at what this extension is supposed to do, the initial description makes it look like a pretty cool tool. The main description says that with this extension, you can “search and access popular TV quick links instantly.” This extension provides you with “links to popular TV streaming resources and sites.” That’s something you should expect from it considering its name is Access TV Streaming. However, aside from that, the extension should also give you “quicklinks to shopping and commonly used social sites,” which would mean the extension gives you shortcuts and maybe even bookmarks (?) to the sites you visit often.

It is actually rather doubtful whether you need Access TV Streaming (or any other third-party app for that matter) to give you shortcuts. After all, you can have an entire shortcut or bookmark tab on your browser. And it’s always better to go to a site directly than through a mediator.

Aside from these shortcuts, Access TV Streaming also gives you a “convenient web search powered by Yahoo!” So, if you think that your browser’s search settings were changed behind your back, better think again. Access TV Streaming informs you about these changes; it’s just that users often fail to see this information, and they don’t notice how they add the app to their browsers.

It might sound odd because who would install something they don’t want? However, Access TV Streaming and other similar apps often travel via third-party routes, and they could be added to the browser through various pop-ups and new window redirects. This means that users have to attentive when they visit websites that support third-party advertising. It might not be your intention, but sometimes trying to close a new pop-up window results in freeware installation. After all, it’s true that the pop-up window disappears the moment an extension is added.

However, when Access TV Streaming is added to your browser, you also agree to give the app permission to:

  • Replace the page you see when opening a new tab

  • Read your browsing history

So, with these permissions, Access TV Streaming can track your browsing history, and it allows the app to get the idea of what you like and prefer. Of course, the app cannot collect personally identifiable information, but it could still display commercial ads that would be tweaked based on your preferences. When you see a custom ad, you are more likely to interact with it. This is exactly what Access TV Streaming needs because that’s how the extension makes money.

There’s nothing wrong with this scheme, but it could be easily exploited by cybercriminals. For instance, someone could make use of the advertising space offered by Access TV Streaming to promote their content. And if the content in question is related to malware distribution, users could find themselves in serious trouble.

The point is that if you have a program or an app that you didn’t want to have, you clearly need to remove it. We are lucky that we can remove Access TV Streaming without too much trouble. You just need to delete it via the browser’s settings, or you can reset the browser’s settings to default. That would allow you to get rid of all the tracking cookies and start with a new slate. On top of that, you should also consider acquiring a powerful security tool. You need to scan your system and see if there are more potential threats on-board, so a security tool is a must. Finally, don’t forget to stay away from suspicious websites that could be part of the freeware distribution network.
