History Wipe Clean

Have you ever wanted to delete every trace of your web browsing history? For whatever reason, you must have wanted a piece of your privacy back, haven’t you? Maybe you figured that History Wipe Clean could help you with that? Or maybe this application simply popped up on your browser out of nowhere one day? Whichever it might be, we would like to suggest removing History Wipe Clean right now. This application is a potentially unwanted program, and it usually enters target systems accidentally when users are not careful about the programs they download and install.

As far as the configurations are concerned, this application is a Chrome extension. So, it works only on the Chrome browser. However, keeping in mind that potentially unwanted programs often come bundled with freeware, it doesn’t mean that you cannot be affected by whatever it is related to just because you don’t use the Chrome browser.

The bottom line here is that you have to be attentive when you browse the sites that are full of third-party advertisements because you can never know when you might be exposed to such things as History Wipe Clean. For instance, a redirect might try to add it to your browser, and you click the bold button just because, just to close the annoying window, History Wipe Clean would be added to your browser immediately.

Here, we cannot say that History Wipe Clean enters your system without your permission. Although the application could be distributed via freeware downloads, pop-ups, and redirects, it can still be added to the browser directly via the Chrome Web Store. Hence, it doesn’t try to hide its presence, and it tells you upfront the modifications it performs on your browser. The modifications are as follow:

  • Read your browsing history

  • Manage your downloads

Now, although History Wipe Clean doesn’t change your default homepage and search engine, this application can still read your browsing history. It means that it can employ tracking cookies to collect data on your browsing habits. This way, the app can find out more about your likes and preferences. With all the information it collects, the application can, later on, generate custom commercial content through all the notifications it might display. Although this is not inherently malicious, no one can guarantee that History Wipe Clean displays only safe commercial ads. The app doesn’t review them, and malevolent third parties could easily make use of this application to promote their corrupted content.

As for the original function, the official website for History Wipe Clean (via historywipe.org) says that this application “wipes your history clean with no extra steps and no extra hassle.” And you can just “wipe your browser history clean effortlessly. Save time with an easy to use browser extension.”

Yes, so, those functions? They don’t work. At least that’s what we found in our internal lab. When we gave this application a test run, it didn’t delete anything. And the question is, why would you ever use a third-party application when you can wipe out your browsing history through the tools given to you by your browser?

The point is that employing a third-party application always comes with some catch. You might be exposed to commercial ads, or your browsing history could be shared with unreliable third parties. Whichever the reason, it is clear that when you don’t want a program, and the program is there on your computer, you should remove the program.

Luckily, it is really easy to wipe out History Wipe Clean for good. You can delete the app via your browser’s extension menu. Also, if you want to be sure that all the tracking cookies have been deleted too, you can reset your browser settings to default (this is exactly what we’re going to do). Finally, be sure to scan your system with the SpyHunter free scanner. It is very likely that there are more undesirable programs you have no idea about, so a thorough system scan with a security tool of your choice would be a good idea. Finally, be sure to review your browsing habits. Stay away from freeware websites and other suspicious pages that might be involved in freeware distribution.
