Weather Waves

Weather Waves is yet another potentially unwanted program (PUP) to come from Innover Group. This developer has released HistorySee, Search Anything, Safeplex Search, and other PUPs as well. All of them are meant to assist people somehow, but using all of them can be disadvantageous as well. In this report, we are discussing a Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox extension that claims to offer weather reports in the most convenient way. Well, if that was all that the extension was capable of, we would not be advocating for its elimination. The recommendation of the experts in our internal lab is that you remove Weather Waves because it modifies the search results shown to you in a suspicious manner and because it can track and share information about your browsing activity and even your geographical location. If you already know enough, you can scroll down to find a guide that should help you delete the PUP. If you understand that there is more to learn about this extension, continue reading.

If you use Google Chrome, you might have downloaded Weather Waves from the Chrome web store, at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/weather-waves/jpdlfloakhhhcbkcplblnohkdkflbmki. If you use Mozilla Firefox, you might have downloaded the extension directly from weatherwaves.co. In both cases, you also could have been introduced to the potentially unwanted program via a bundled downloader. They are quite popular these days, and unreliable parties or the developers of less-known programs and add-ons often use them to spread malware or PUPs. Has this happened? If it has, you must inspect the additionally installed applications and extensions because you never know what could have been dropped. Remember that you should never judge a book by its cover, and so even if whatever was downloaded appears to be useful and trustworthy, you should research it anyway. The best thing you can do is install a trusted malware scanner, a tool that was designed to inspect your system and determine which pieces require removal. Obviously, if you are informed that you need to delete something, you should waste no time.

Even if other threats do not exist, Weather Waves is still a PUP that is very suspicious. The statement presented at weatherwaves.co/common/privacypolicy.html informs that the extension can capture some information automatically. This information is then used to “enable service providers and [the developer] to serve relevant content and advertising.” The description on the Chrome web store also reveals that the PUP can read browsing history, check frequently visited sites, detect your physical location, as well as change the new tab page. According to our researchers, weatherwaves.co changes the default search provider as well. When you use this search tool, you are automatically redirected to Yahoo Search, but do not rush to interact with the results that are shown to you because they are potentially unreliable. Weather Waves modifies the results you see to include sponsored content. Of course, it shows a 7-day weather forecast, pollen allergy reports, and weather reports for multiple cities. That being said, even if you find the PUP to be useful – and let’s be honest, it does not offer anything that amazing – if you do not want to be tracked and have your web searches modifies, it might be best to delete the PUP.

Do not threat if you do not have previous experience with the removal of potentially unwanted programs. It is all very simple, as all you have to do is open your browser, find the unwanted Weather Waves extension, and click the ‘Remove’ button. Additionally, we also recommend clearing browsing data to ensure that all data-tracking tools are erased as well. What if other threats were found? You can research and delete them one by one, and the manual removal guides on our websites should help, or you can install an anti-malware program that will clear your operating system automatically. It will swiftly delete Weather Waves along with anything else that might require it and, on top of that, it will also secure your system to make sure that you do not let in any other potentially unwanted programs or more dangerous threats in the future.
