Danger level 3
Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

Free Streaming Radio

Free Streaming Radio sounds pretty cool from the get-go, but when we look closer at it, we can clearly see that it is a potentially unwanted application. After all, such apps should improve or enhance our web browsing experience, but with Free Streaming Radio, it is very likely that the app’s functionality is borderline questionable. We’re going to discuss this extension in greater detail, but if you’re here for the removal instructions, simply scroll down to the bottom of this description. We would also recommend investing in a licensed antispyware tool that would help you safeguard your system against various other threats.

Now, is Free Streaming Radio really a security threat or not? Technically, this application doesn’t try to infect you with malware. It doesn’t try to steal your personal information, too. However, these extensions might be exploited by malevolent third parties to promote corrupt content, and that is the main reason security experts recommend removing Free Streaming Radio and other similar applications as soon as possible.

What’s more, sometimes users add such extensions willingly, but it is a lot more likely that Free Streaming Radio comes into your system accidentally. Sure, these apps have official homepages, but they are also distributed via bundled downloads. So, if you have recently downloaded something from a file-sharing website, there is a chance that this extension was bundled in the installer file, too. And while it is possible to deselect unwanted apps during the installation process; most users just breeze through it without any second thought. Consequently, Free Streaming Radio and many other unwanted apps find their way into the target system.

At first sight, it might seem that Free Streaming Radio is a rather useful extension. It works on the Google Chrome browser, and it is supposed to help you listen to radio stations through your browser. However, the question is whether you really need a third-party app for that when you can listen to your favorite stations directly through their websites or their official apps. Also, Free Streaming Radio requires a lot of permissions when it gets added to your browser. For example, once added, the extension can “replace the page you see when opening a new tab, read your browsing history, and manage your apps, extensions, and themes.”

To tell you the truth, that is quite intrusive, and with so many permissions, Free Streaming Radio can clearly expose you to potentially unwanted content. Also, when it modifies the new tab settings, most of your web searches get automatically redirected to Yahoo! Search. Of course, Yahoo! Search has nothing to do with Free Streaming Radio, and the engine is just being used by the app to make it look more reliable. However, all the search results will be modified based on your browsing history.

The point is that you might be more willing to click the promoted links if they are somehow related to your likes and preferences. This is called the pay-per-click system, where an app promotes third-party content. This type of advertising tactic is completely normal and acceptable. Our only worry is that Free Streaming Radio cannot and does not review the outgoing links it promotes. So, what might happen is that some of the links could be embedded there by criminals who want to exploit Free Streaming Radio for content promotion.

This does not happen too often, and the chances of getting infected with malware through Free Streaming Radio are really low. However, if you never intended to have this application on your browser, this is your chance you delete it.

Since Free Streaming Radio only works on the Chrome browser, you need to remove it via the browser’s settings menu. If you feel that there might be more unwanted extensions added, you can check the extensions list or simply reset your browser settings to default.

After manual removal, you should also scan your computer with the SpyHunter free scanner. Since freeware often comes in groups, Free Streaming Radio might be just one of the many unwanted programs installed on your computer. You need to locate all the unnecessary apps and then delete them immediately. If necessary, invest in a security tool that will terminate potential threats for you automatically.
