Byoml

If the New Tab on the Chrome browser was taken over by BYOML, you might have noticed a search tool that redirects your searches to a third-party search engine. Although it does not appear to corrupt the homepage or affect the default web browser, our research team indicates that the results delivered via this search engine could be unreliable. Due to this reason, we classify this extension as a PUP (potentially unwanted program). You have to decide for yourself if you want to remove Byoml from your Chrome web browser, but if you do not know what to do, continue reading this report to learn all about it. Our research team has inspected the PUP to provide you with information that matters. If you feel like your questions were not answered, you can always post them in the comments section, and our experts will try to assist you as soon as possible.

The official website representing Byoml is byoml.com. According to the information you can find on this website, the extension can provide you with “uplifting inspiration” quotes, as well as tips that could, allegedly, “improve your life.” The website claims that Byoml creates a “personal journey you can follow all the way to a healthier and happier life.” This might sound pretty great if you are in a slump and lack motivation. However, at the time of research, it was not possible to download the extension from its official website. The installer available on the Chrome web store, on the other hand, was active. If you used chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/byoml/lofpmibabeibcaoaddiljhkbjmfflphk/ to download the extension, you must have been warned that the PUP can change your data, take over the new tab, display notifications, and manage apps, extensions, and themes. The strangest thing might be that the extension has only 3 users and 1 rating. Quite possibly, it is a completely new extension that was created by Genieo. Our research team is already familiar with this company because it created SearchItApp.com, a browser hijacker whose removal we have discussed in a report published back in 2015.

There is no doubt that many users might find Byoml quite appealing. It has a pretty cool design, and every time the new tab page is refreshed, a new inspirational quote shows up. That is not what we need to discuss further. It is much more important to talk about other features offered by the PUP. While the links to facebook.com, gmail.com, youtube.com, twitter.com, and pinterest.com websites shown at the top are legitimate and harmless, the search tool is suspicious. Only recently, all search queries entered into this search box were redirected to Bing Search. At the moment, they are redirected to Yahoo Search. This might not seem like a big deal, but if you were redirected without permission, that is a red flag. On top of that, our research team warns that the results can be modified, which might be the most important reason to delete Byoml from the browser. If you happen to face search.byoml.com – which exits but was not presented along with the PUP – note that it can show modified results too. Another thing to note is that Genieo can share information about you with “affiliated companies.” You can learn more about this by reading the Privacy Policy at byoml.com/privacy.

If you decide to delete Byoml from your Google Chrome browser, you can follow the manual removal instructions below. First, get rid of the undesirable add-on. Then, clear the browsing data to ensure that cookies are not left behind to track information about you and your activity online. If you downloaded the PUP not from the official website or the Chrome web store but using a bundled installer, you need to think if there is a possibility that more malicious programs got in. If you are not sure, scan your operating system using a legitimate malware scanner, and you will find out soon if there are other things you should delete. If you find malware, consider the option of utilizing anti-malware software. It would automatically remove Byoml along with everything else that might exist on your operating system. This is also the software you want to install if you want to secure your operating system and browsers.
