ConvertoWiz

ConvertoWiz is an extension for the Google Chrome web browser that is meant to help users convert files into PDF format. If you go to portal.convertowiz.com, click the “Drag or Click Here to upload a document you want to convert” area, you can convert any file you want. After that, you have the option to download the file right away or send it to your email address. This service appears to be free, and the extension is not required. Nonetheless, it exists, and quite a few users have downloaded it already. If you have done that too, you want to make sure that you read this article. Although the extension can look harmless, our research team warns that it could be unreliable too. If you need no explanation, and you only care about removing ConvertoWiz, scroll down below to find a guide that shows how to delete this potentially unwanted program (PUP) from the browser. If you want to learn more, keep reading.

Chrome users should be able to download ConvertoWiz from install.convertowiz.com, but, at the time of research, it opened “Error on page, address could not be found” message, and the “Click here to continue” button routed to an unreliable website asking to accept notifications, which is something you should NEVER do. That being said, the extension is still available on the Chrome web store, and you can find it at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/convertowiz/ffmnloealihfajgcecbndhaehbhcdelf. At the time of analysis, the app had nearly 65,000 users, and it had a 5-star rating. Considering that and the fact that the service works, it is no wonder so many people have downloaded ConvertoWiz. If you installed the extension from the Chrome store too, you should have been informed that it can read the browsing history, change search settings, and change YOUR data on its own websites. This is quite an intrusive behavior for a tool that is meant to convert files, and that is one of the reasons Chrome users choose to delete this potentially unwanted program.

Although it is pretty unnerving that a file-converting extension can read browsing history, it is even more unnerving that it can share this data with third parties. The Privacy Policy at convertowiz.com/privacy does not exactly say how this data could be used or which parties it could be shared with, and that puts your security at potential risk. If you do not want to take risks, removing the PUP is the way to go. We also recommend deleting ConvertoWiz because of its search tool. Once you install the extension, the default search provider is modified. Although it is suggested that you can convert files easier because of it (you are instructed to type PDF, tap the Space key, and convert a file), in reality, the PUP hijacks the search provider. If you do not use the pdf+space+convert shortcut, and you enter search keywords into the address bar as per usual, you are redirected via feed.convertowiz.com to search.yahoo.com. The results introduced to you are modified. Of course, many users are familiar with Yahoo, and so they might think nothing of it; however, interacting with the search results can be risky because ads, sponsored content, and even links to keyword-unrelated sites could be shown. In the worst case scenario, your own security could be put on a line, and that is why you must consider removal.

You do not need to be a genius to delete ConvertoWiz from your Google Chrome browser. In fact, we are sure that anyone can get rid of this potentially unwanted program. You might already be familiar with the process, but if you are not, follow the steps presented below. Because the PUP also uses web cookies, we suggest clearing the browsing data too. This will ensure that not a single particle of the PUP remains. In case you downloaded the PUP using a software bundle and a bunch of suspicious programs were installed along with it, you have to think carefully if you will be able to clear them all manually. If you do not think you will, employ anti-malware software. In fact, employ it in any case because it will keep your operating system and browsers protected to keep you safe.
