Danger level 3
Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

MusicTab Newtab

MusicTab Newtab is a browser extension offered on MusicTab.org. What you ought to know about it is it falls under the classification of potentially unwanted programs. Currently, it can be encountered by Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox users. Our researchers say the application may change user’s browser preferences to make him surf the Internet with the extension’s provided search engine. The problem is while doing so the software might gather information about your interests and show you third-party advertising content for which the tool’s creators take no responsibility. If you do not like the way this potentially unwanted program might alter your browser preferences or the fact it could show doubtful advertising content, we advise removing MusicTab Newtab with the instructions available below, or your chosen antimalware tool. Naturally, if you need more information about it, you should read the rest of this article.

Even though MusicTab Newtab can be downloaded from its official website, we do not believe it is the only channel the application is being spread through. Most of the potentially unwanted programs are distributed with bundled setup files. It means the user may install them together with other tools. Sometimes they do so without even realizing it, as some bundled installers set them up automatically if the user does not pick advanced installation settings, and deselect unwanted suggestions himself. For this reason, our researchers highly recommend being attentive during the installation process. If you can choose custom or advanced settings, you should do so, as well as, review all terms and conditions carefully.

Nonetheless, many bundled installers offering potentially unwanted programs, browser hijackers, and threats alike are offered on pop-ups, various file-sharing sites, and other untrustworthy sources you should stay away from. Therefore, in the future, it would be best to download installers only from legitimate websites. Lastly, we would suggest installing a reliable antimalware tool since it can protect the system from various threats, and warn the user whenever he is about to interact with potentially dangerous content.

MusicTab Newtab might be described as a tool that can provide free music for everyone. Also, we noticed on its site there were three user reviews, at the moment we researched this potentially unwanted program. All of them claimed the extension is great and recommended to install it for the site’s visitors. Unfortunately, there were no links to the reviews’ original source, which means they could be fake. Always remember, all reviews, partner signs, awards, and similar content should always have links to sites proving their legitimacy. Therefore, when dealing with questionable tools, it is safer to rely on expert reviews.

Another thing we found on the potentially unwanted program’s site is its Privacy Policy and End User License Agreement documents. Statements in them say MusicTab Newtab could gather information about the user’s browsing habits with the help of cookies and other technologies. It is also said the software may show third-party advertising material. It is possible such content could be injected into the results displayed by the extension’s search engine, which appears to be a modified Yahoo version. As we said earlier it does not look like this content could be trusted because the extension’s developers take no responsibility for it. Also, the mentioned documents reveal the extension’s creators take no responsibility for their product either. While this does not make the tool malicious or dangerous, it does not make it look reliable either.

All things considered, it is possible the potentially unwanted program’s behavior could annoy some users, as well as, put their systems at risk if the extension displays any ads coming from untrustworthy sources. In case you do not think MusicTab Newtab is worthy of your trust and you do not want to take any chances with it, we advise deleting the extension with the instructions available below or your chosen antimalware tool.
