Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

MyOfficeTab

There are tons of applications out there that seemingly come with nice features. MyOfficeTab is one of such applications. At first glance, it really seems that this app can enhance your web browsing experience. However, there is a reason our research team categorizes it as a potentially unwanted program. It means that this application may exhibit a variety of behavioral patterns that might be deemed undesirable. It would be for the best to remove MyOfficeTab from your system because this application is not as beneficial as it claims to be. Please scroll down to the bottom for the manual removal instructions.

The application works only on the Chrome browser, and we can also say that it is a Chrome extension. As you can probably tell, the application is far from a malicious infection. A malicious infection does not ask for your permission before it enters your system. On the contrary, it slithers in behind your back and then destroys your system.

MyOfficeTab, on the other hand, requires your permission to be added to your browser. What’s more, it can be easily downloaded via official channels. So we cannot say that it is a malicious infection, although you might find certain security websites that say it is a browser hijacker.

Why would anyone call MyOfficeTab a browser hijacker? Well, that is because this extension modifies your browser’s settings. Normally, a browser hijacker changes your default homepage and search engine without your permission. This extension also performs certain browser settings modifications, but the difference is that it requires your permission to do so. And if you think that you did not give your permission for that, it means that you have added the extension to your browser accidentally.

This can actually happen quite often due to the various methods of extension distribution. As mentioned, MyOfficeTab can be distributed through official channels. That would include the official homepage at myofficetab.com. However, browser extensions can also come bundled with freeware. So if you tend to download freeware applications from unfamiliar websites, you might want to start reading through the installation wizards because that would save you the trouble of dealing with this extension later on.

Not that MyOfficeTab is extremely malicious. At first, it might even look useful. If you take a look at the official webpage, it says that with this extension, you can get quick access to your Google Drive documents, and you can use the extension to search your documents directly on your browser’s NewTab page. However, when you add the extension, it requires a lot of permissions. This is what you can find on the pop-up that informs you about the extension installation:

It can:

  • Read and change your data on all myofficetab.com sites and newtab.myofficetab.com

  • Replace the page you see when opening a new tab

  • Read your browsing history

  • Manage your apps, extension, and themes

As you can see, the extension can be quite intrusive, even though it DOES ask for permission to perform these modifications. However, if you add it to your browser along with many other extensions, you might miss this list, and it might seem that your browser has been taken over by a malicious infection.

Not to mention that MyOfficeTab could also track your online history to collect information on your web browsing habits and then use it for online marketing purposes. While such behavior is not downright malicious, coupled with corrupted content, it could inadvertently expose you to malware distribution schemes. Therefore, if you did not plan to have this extension on your browser, you will do yourself a favor if you remove MyOfficeTab right now.

Below you will find the manual removal instructions for this extension. Please note that if it came bundled with freeware, you might have more unwanted software installed on your PC. To get rid of that software, you should scan your PC with the SpyHunter free scanner. This way, you will know exactly which programs you have to remove. If necessary, you can also use a reliable antispyware tool to terminate them all. Do what you must to protect your personal information and your computer system from third-party exploitation.
