Danger level 3
Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

SearchFunctions

SearchFunctions is a potentially unwanted program that could be encountered by users who browse the Internet with Google Chrome. In other words, the application is not compatible with any other browser besides Google Chrome. According to our researchers after installation, it might replace default search engine, homepage or new tab page with a suspicious search engine known as searchfunctions.com. It seems surfing the Internet with it could be potentially dangerous since the tool might gather various user data to serve advertisements from different third parties. To learn more about this extension, we encourage you to read the rest of our article. Also, should you decide you do not want to keep SearchFunctions or its presented search engine any longer we can help you get rid of it; if you only follow the deletion instructions located at the end of this article.

It looks like at the moment of writing the potentially unwanted program could be downloaded from its official website called mysearchinc.com or Chrome Web Store page (chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/searchfunctions/mijdkdpmeeimcoappnkhahponnallcbk?utm_source=chrome-ntp-icon). Besides, our researchers believe SearchFunctions might be distributed via bundled installation files. For instance, the extension could be bundled with browser hijackers, adware, other potentially unwanted programs, and so on. Applications such as these are often available on unreliable file-sharing web pages, through annoying pop-up ads, etc. Therefore, it is more likely to encounter such software if you visit sites distributing pirated programs and untrustworthy freeware, click doubtful ads, and so on.

No doubt, those who wish to maintain their system clean and keep it safe from unreliable applications should stay away from sites that could distribute them. Plus, it is advisable to pick advanced installation settings whenever it is possible and review the additional conditions carefully as sometimes it allows the user to deselect unwanted bundled tools. As you realize, SearchFunctions could come as an extra suggestion, and the chances are the users might be able to uncheck it if they only choose custom installation. Another way to, to guard the system against potentially unwanted programs alike or other threats is to select a reliable antimalware tool and install it on the computer. This way you could scan installers you do not trust or other suspicious data downloaded from the Internet for safety precautions. Moreover, a trustworthy tool should be able to warn the user about potential threats too all there is to do is keep it active and up to date.

However, if the user places SearchFunctions on his Google Chrome, the potentially unwanted program may change his homepage or other preferences we mentioned earlier with an unreliable search engine called searchfunctions.com. After reading its Privacy Policy document, our researchers learned the application might gather user’s information, such as is IP address, search keywords, clicked ads, and so not only to improve the software but also to improve “ads served.” Moreover, the same document states the potentially unwanted program’s developers “may rent, sell, or share aggregated information and other non-personally identifiable information with third parties for multiple reasons, including to develop and deliver search results and advertising.”

The problem is the mentioned advertisements might come from various third parties, which means they may not be any guarantees about their reliability. What we mean is, it is possible, some of the advertisements might appear to be potentially dangerous, for example, they could encourage you to download other untrustworthy applications, lead you to malicious web pages, or ask to participate in fake surveys or lotteries, and so on. Knowing this could happen, we would not recommend using the search engine presented by SearchFunctions or leaving this extension installed. If you think it would be for the best as well, we urge you not to waste any time with this potentially unwanted program and erase it right away.

To eliminate it manually, you could follow our deletion instructions available at the end of this article. The other way is to acquire a reliable antimalware tool, scan the computer, and press the given removal button to erase all detections at the same time.
