- Hijacks homepage
- Changes default search engine
Ectodermicyear Extension is a new Google Chrome add-on that we have classified as a browser hijacker because it was designed to replace your browser’s homepage address, new tab page, and search engine. For this action alone, you ought to remove it, but there is more to this application than meets the eye. Research has shown that it can also show ads in its search results and the important thing here is that the ads can be deceptive as they can redirect you to scam, clone or phishing websites that can jeopardize your computer’s security and your privacy. On top of that, this application can collect information about you and use it to customize the promoted links.
If your computer were to become infected with malicious browser extension, then it will it will cause your search engine to redirect all search queries through https://amiablesearch.com/ectodermicyear/?keyword= which, in turn, will redirect you to a modified Yahoo search engine that will present you with search results that can feature questionable links that can redirect you to all kinds of shady websites that can compromise your privacy and potentially infect your computer with dangerous malware.
Apart from that, this hijacker might have been configured to collect some non-personally identifiable information about you. We think that, at the very least, Ectodermicyear Extension should collect information such as your browser version, operating system type and version, Internet Protocol (IP) address, Internet Service Provider (ISP,) browsing history, entered search terms, approximate location, and so on. This hijacker might obtain this information using browser cookies, web beacons, and so on. Therefore, you should refrain from using it and consider getting rid of it because it will not improve your browsing experience in any way shape or form.
The reason we have classified Ectodermicyear Extension as a browser hijacker is because, unlike legitimate applications, it does not ask your permission to change the search-related settings outlined above. Also, its developers distribute it using deceptive methods. We have found that it has been removed from the Chrome Web Store, but it is possible that it can be distributed using bundled software installers featured on freeware hosting websites. Such sites make money off promoting shady and outright malicious software so your PC can become infected with Ectodermicyear Extension secretly as the bundled software installers will not allow you to deselect its installation. Since Ectodermicyear Extension has been taken off the Chrome Web Store, its unique extension ID is no longer known, but you should be able to delete it from Google Chrome like any other legitimate browser extension.
We hope you found this article insightful because this program can be deceiving. It looks legitimate but only in appearance because it offers nothing of value to the end user. Therefore, because it can change your search-related settings without consent and show potentially dangerous ads, we recommend that you remove this application from your browser. You should also consider getting an anti-malware program to protect your PC in real-time and prevent applications such as this one from being installed. See the guide below on how to delete Ectodermicyear Extension from Chrome.
