Danger level 3
Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

History Open

After installing free software that you downloaded from a questionable source, you may find History Open, a questionable browser extension active in your Google Chrome browser. You should know that this application has been flagged and found to be a potentially unwanted program, or PUP in short. We do not want to say that this tool is a serious threat that could endanger your system but we have certainly found some suspicious traits about it that question its reliability. Let us start by saying that it is a completely unnecessary tool as it simply offers you access to your browsing history by clicking its icon in the toolbar. You probably know that you can also easily display the built-in history page whose use should be totally safe. This obviously makes this PUP redundant right away. However, our research shows that you cannot even install it officially, which can only mean one thing: This PUP spreads in questionable ways. Therefore, the presence of this tool in your Chrome browser could indicate that there may be malware infections on board, too. This is why we consider it to be the best solution for you to remove History Open from your PC.

We have found two official pages that promote this worthless tool but the truth is that the “Add to Chrome” button does not work the official page at historyopen.com because it is supposed to open the Chrome web store page at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/icfhggboopebcohpcffdgnbmodalpbic, which has been blocked recently. We managed to reach this page before and saw that over 100 thousand computer users had installed it. And, then suddenly this page is not found anymore. There could be one reason for that: Google has blocked this extension as a potential threat. This happens a lot since this store can host potentially harmful tools until reported as possible threats. You should not take the reliability of these extensions for granted; we recommend that you always do your research before installing any software actually. We also need to mention that the official page is rather simplistic; in fact, there is no link even to legal documents like the Privacy Policy or the EULA, which are both required for legitimate pages and software. We believe that only this could already be enough to remove History Open from your computer, but there is more to come.

Since you cannot download this PUP from any official sources, it has to spread in alternative ways. One such way is freeware bundles. The problem with such a software package is that they usually contain a number of PUPs as well as malware threats (e.g., browser hijackers, Trojans, fake warnings, and adware). A lot of inexperienced users fall for the confusing installation wizards that may not disclose properly the full content or you may be even pushed to accept certain additional tools or browser setting changes if you want your free software. If you do not want to infect your computer with such a lot, we suggest that you only download programs and updates from legitimate and official pages, you do not visit suspicious websites hosting unsafe third-party ads, and you stop clicking on third-party ads altogether. It is also possible to infect your computer with more threats when it has already been infected with adware, for example. In order to restore the security level, we recommend that you use a reliable online malware scanner to identify all possible threats after your delete History Open.

This PUP offers you quick access to your browsing history in the Google Chrome browser. You will find a small icon in the top-right corner of your browser window. If you click on this icon, a history panel shows up where you can see the list of history items, which you can search or delete. The truth of the matter is that this tool does not do anything extra or anything more than the built-in history function itself. We believe that this browser extension is totally redundant and should not be left in your browsers. Even more so that it can gather data about your browsing habits and more. If third parties can get their hands on such information, they can send customized content to your screen, which could be used as bait by cyber criminals to lure you onto their malicious sites. If you consider yourself a security-minded user, you should remove History Open as soon as possible.

You can easily eliminate this useless program by using our guide below. All it takes is removing the extension in question through the Extension Manager. Please remember that this may be the smallest threat right now on your computer. It is essential that you address the rest of the threats if you want to feel safe while using your computer and going online. We suggest that you defend your PC by installing a proper anti-malware program, such as SpyHunter. Of course, this does not mean that you can forget about updating all your programs and drivers from official sources.
