- Hijacks homepage
- Changes default search engine
Polarity Technologies Ltd. strikes again, and this time we are dealing with Search.searchgetlnn.com. If you do not keep yourself up-to-date with the latest security news, you might be unfamiliar with this company, but our research team must have already reviewed hundreds of hijackers and potentially unwanted programs that were created by it. The PUPs are always linked to the hijackers because they are built to introduce users to them. In our case, “Get Local News Now” is the extension that the company is using to introduce unsuspecting users to the hijacker. Once the extension is installed, the homepage, default search provider, and New Tab (depends on the browser) are corrupted to showcase the hijacker. Needless to say, if you are introduced to the changes before they are initiated, you might think nothing of them. Well, that is a mistake. This hijacker is not reliable, and the sooner you delete it from your browser, the better. Do you know how to remove Search.searchgetlnn.com? We do, and we are here to share this information with you.
Search.hemailloginnow.com, Search.loginemailaccounts.com, and Search.searchvzcm.com are just a few of the many hijackers that Search.searchgetlnn.com is similar to. Although these hijackers do not have official downloaders, the extensions representing them do. The “Get Local News Now” add-on is officially represented at getlocalnewsnow.com, but Chrome users can install it from the Chrome web store (chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/get-local-news-now/licalonpccnebmillfginpdojekmdnkk). Well, if an add-on is represented via the Chrome web store, that means it is reliable, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, it does not, and, recently, we have found quite a few unreliable add-ons represented via this reputable source. This just proves that you have to be vigilant at all times. While you can acquire the suspicious Search.searchgetlnn.com in a seemingly legal manner, some users might find it represented via unfamiliar installers that could bundle malicious programs together. Obviously, if that is the case, you have to delete these additional threats as well. Run a full system scan ASAP to check if you need to worry about this. Unfortunately, the hijacker itself is classified as a potential threat, and it deserves your attention too.
As the “Get Local News Now” add-on promises, you are introduced to the latest news; however, it is unlikely to be done in the way you expect it. Search.searchgetlnn.com displays easy-access links to Google and Yahoo news, as well as CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News, but that is not very useful. At the bottom of the home page, you are also introduced to a YouTube Playlist linked to Fox News. Does that make the hijacker any more useful? You be the judge of that, but our research team agrees that the hijacker was not created to introduce users to the news. Instead, it was created to introduce users to a search engine that promotes third-party content. Although Search.searchgetlnn.com redirects to Yahoo Search, the results are modified to include sponsored links. On top of that, the redirecting is illegal too, and so you should not ignore that. If that was not enough, it was found that the hijacker can also track personally identifiable information, and that, of course, could put your virtual security at risk. After all, we do not know who this information might be shared with. As you can see, there are plenty of reasons to delete the hijacker.
Have you acquired Search.searchgetlnn.com by installing the “Get Local News Now” extension? If you have, you need to remove this add-on right away. The hijacker will be eliminated along with it. What if the hijacker was installed on its own? In this case, you should be able to delete Search.searchgetlnn.com by changing the homepage URL. And what about the remaining threats? You have to research them individually because we cannot advise you on the removal of infections we are unaware of. Hopefully, you can find the guides you need on pcthreat.com. There is one more thing you can consider, and that is the installation of anti-malware software that would automatically identify and erase all infections that are currently active on your PC. The hijacker would be eliminated as well. Are you still not sure what you should do? Our research team is prepared to answer the questions you might have, and you can add them to the comments area below.
