Danger level 8
Type: Browser Hijackers

BrowserModifier.NavExcel

BrowserModifier.NavExcel is considered a Browser hijacker application, or as is categorized by some experts as a search hijacker.

What this entails is that BrowserModifier.NavExcel will make use of covert and/or undocumented tactics to ensure a way of penetrating a computer system; once embed within a system, it will then redirect the browser to its affiliate websites.

BrowserModifier.NavExcel is also associated with the following alias:
- navapp.exe

This file association is a process belonging to NavExcel Adware. Therefore this process may record online activities as well as show advertisements on the infected system’s desktop. This process should be removed to ensure the integrity of the user’s personal privacy.

BrowserModifier.NavExcel is known to contain the following properties:
- Creates a startup registry entry.
- Registers a 32-bit in-process server DLL.
- Registers a Browser Helper Object (Microsoft\'s Internet Explorer plug-in module).
- Contains characteristics of an identified security risk.

A computer infected with BrowserModifier.NavExcel may display the following basic symptoms, which a computer user should look out for:
• Slow computer performance:
It just takes one parasite like BrowserModifier.NavExcel to slow down a computer dramatically. If your PC takes longer than usual to reboot, or if your Internet connection is unusually slow, you may be infected with BrowserModifier.NavExcel.

• New desktop shortcuts or switched homepage:
Badware like BrowserModifier.NavExcel may change your Internet settings to redirect your homepage to another website. Badware can even add desktop shortcuts to your PC. It is also not uncommon for this type of malware to change legitimate websites, such as www.google.com, and use them to further create the illusion that your system is I danger – by adding aggressive advertising to the homepage you will be directed to.

• Annoying pop-up messages:
Badware can bombard your computer with popup ads, even when you’re not online. Through these pop-up messages, you may be tricked into downloading more spyware.

One will need to remove BrowserModifier.NavExcel from the infected computer system, as soon as it has been detected. The thing about BrowserModifier.NavExcel, and many malware applications, is the fact that it is extremely difficult to delete from an infected system.

Manual removal is probably your best bet at maintaining the integrity of your computer, but manual removal should only be tried by those individuals that know a bit about registry files, and should be left to the individual who knows how to navigate their way around system files.

All in all though, I would recommend, especially if you are not completely tech savvy, one should make use of a reliable and legitimate, fully functional, up-to-date anti-spyware application, to remove BrowserModifier.NavExcel and all its components from the infected computer system.
