Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

Mute All Tabs

Mute All Tabs is one of the potentially unwanted programs that seem to have useful tools at first, but eventually appear to be rather useless and annoying. This particular browser extension allows users to mute audio and video recordings played on separate browser tabs at the same time. Unfortunately, this is most likely not the only potentially unwanted program’s task. Our specialists think Mute All Tabs might also gather information while you are surfing the Internet or even show you targeted advertising content provided by questionable third-party companies. This is why we would advise not to take any chances with the application and erase it from the PC before it causes you any trouble. To help users with the removal part, we prepared deletion instructions; you can use them if you slide a little bit below the article. However, first, we invite you to continue reading the text so you could find out more information about this suspicious extension.

So far it looks like the potentially unwanted program is only compatible with Google Chrome. For now, it is still being distributed through the Chrome Web Store page (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mute-all-tabs/mchgohapobpjfpbnocgciacjgmdmhclm?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog). The description available through the mentioned link does not say anything else besides “Mutes all tabs by pausing all audio and video.” It seems to us this feature is quite useless at least for Google Chrome users since the browser does not play YouTube videos opened on new tabs unless you click the tab. In other words, the videos opened on separate tabs are automatically paused until you open the tab. Therefore, it does not surprise us Mute All Tabs has been rated only two stars out of five (meaning users disliked it).

The other potentially unwanted application’s distribution channel is its official website available on mutealltabs.info. Same as the profile on Chrome Web Store the site does not have a decent description. In the bottom-right corner of the tool’s official web page, there is a sentence suggesting the extension was made with love by Mute All Tabs. The company’s name has a link, but if you click it you only get redirected back to mutealltabs.info, so there is no information about the add-on’s creators. Besides, there are no End User License Agreement and no Privacy Policy documents, which makes us question the application’s reliability. Without these statements, we do not know what kind of information Mute All Tabs could be gathering while the user is browsing. Not to mention the extension could be allowed to automatically download updates or completely new versions of similarly suspicious software, although we cannot know for certain.

Furthermore, based on our experience with other potentially unwanted programs alike, we believe there is a chance Mute All Tabs could be showing unreliable advertising content from its third-party partners, and some of this content might be possibly dangerous. For example, the ads could have links to websites spreading other potentially unwanted programs, adware, browser hijackers, or it might lead the user to malicious web pages distributing threats like viruses, ransomware, Trojans, and so on. Thus, if you see this suspicious advertising content on your browser, we advise you to stay away from it as much as possible.

All things considered, Mute All Tabs may not be a malicious application, but its working manner does raise a suspicion. Under such circumstances, we encourage you not to risk your computer’s safety by keeping a tool you can easily manage without. Especially when it can be removed so easily. Our specialists say users only need to access extension settings through their browser and delete the potentially unwanted application through them. If you do not know how to do this, you can either follow the instructions placed at the end of this paragraph or get yourself a reliable antimalware tool and deal with the threat while using automatic features.
