Danger level 3
Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

WikiThemes

WikiThemes is advertised as a useful search tool that allows you to access Wikipedia right from your Desktop, but our researchers doubt it has any benefits at all. The program’s main and only feature is a search box, so the tool might look rather plain and of poor quality. Without any additional features, it seems to us it would be easier to simply search the official wikipedia.org web page instead of placing this suspicious application on the system. At this point, it is crucial to mention WikiThemes was categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). It means the software could have undesirable qualities and if you continue reading this article, we will explain them to you in detail. Since our researchers recommend removing the application, we are adding manual deletion instructions slightly below the text, so if you want to erase it, you could slide below and follow the provided steps.

With WikiThemes you may not need to launch a browser, but still, you will need Internet access to get the results. As reported by our researchers the PUP works like a browser that allows browsing only en.wiki2.org. Thus, even though the application is advertised as a tool that should help you reach Wikipedia from your Desktop; in reality it allows you to access some copy of the original web page. The website’s creators claim the site may take some of the information it provides in its articles from wikipedia.org, but it has no affiliation with Wikipedia. Yet WikiThemes official site (WikiThemes.timeapp-studio.com ) claims “The content you are exposed to is fully rendered by Wikipedia.” Given the PUP’s description is a little bit misleading, we do not think it would be wise to trust the application, and if you were hoping to get articles from the original wikipedia.org, you should not waste any time with this doubtful tool.

Furthermore, another reason we do not trust the application is because it might be spread through unreliable channels. Even though, the PUP could be downloaded from its official website we doubt the majority of the tool’s users find it there. It is more likely that the program is being distributed with bundled software installers. If this is the case, some users could install it unknowingly. On some setup wizards, you have to choose advanced installation wizards to see the additionally suggested software, not to mention some users do not read conditions and terms to rush the process. Clearly, this way you might easily install unwanted and even potentially dangerous applications without realizing it. For this reason, you should always carefully review any information given on the configuration wizard. After all, it seems easier to invest a minute and deselect unwanted suggestions instead of having to erase undesired software later.

As the program gets installed it may create a few Registry entries, for example, one of it should allow the PUP to auto-start with the operating system. According to our specialists who tested the software the user might be unable to disable this feature. Therefore, if you are thinking to use WikiThemes, keep it in mind the tool might launch itself without any permission, and it could become quite annoying. Besides Registry entries, the application may also create quite a few folders containing its data. Some of them stay on the system even after the PUP is uninstalled, so users who want to get rid of it should take care of the leftovers themselves.

If you decide to remove the potentially unwanted program from the computer, we encourage you to use the instructions placed below. They will show you not only how to uninstall the PUP via Control Panel, but also how to erase all of its leftovers. If you wish for a more effortless option to deal with WikiThemes, we recommend using a reliable antimalware tool of your choice. It is not difficult to use it as all you have to do is start the full system scan and wait till the deletion button shows up. Afterward, you should keep the tool updated, so it could guard your system from future threats.
