Danger level 3
Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

24stream

24stream is a potentially unwanted program that works on the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers. Our researchers decided to classify it this way because they noticed the application might gather information about the user’s browsing habits, which could be later used to serve targeted advertising. What is even worse is there is a chance the advertisements might come from unknown sources, and this means some of them could be possibly dangerous. Because of this, we do not recommend using 24stream to browse the Internet. If you have already acquired it, you could delete it manually while following the instructions available at the end of this article. The other way would be to use a reliable antimalware tool. Of course, if you require more information about this potentially unwanted program, you should read this article first.

First of all, we should begin by explaining how 24stream might enter the system. Our researchers say the extension could be spread with suspicious advertisements, doubtful file-sharing web pages, etc. Therefore, if you do not want to acquire such unreliable applications in the future, it would be smart to stay away from untrustworthy ads, torrent, and other similar file-sharing websites, etc. Another good idea would be to choose advanced or custom installation settings when there is such an option. Doing so may allow you to deselect the bundled software you may not want to receive. As you see there is a possibility the potentially unwanted program might be distributed with bundled software installers. Additionally, you could pick a reliable antimalware tool. This way you could be warned about possible threats even if you accidentally install doubtful tools or open possibly malicious content.

Furthermore, unlike other similar potentially unwanted programs, 24stream does not replace user’s homepage or new tab page. For instance, according to its description on Chrome Web Store page, the extension “will change your Chrome Default Search.” Thus, it is more like an additional browser tool you can see or use only if you search the Internet. In fact, it seems like the application works only if you insert a particular keyword into the browser’s address box. Since the software claims it can help users find movies and videos the word the users have to insert to search via the potentially unwanted program’s tool is “movies.” To be more accurate, 24stream works if the user types “movies” into the Google Chrome’s or Mozilla Firefox’s address bar and then adds a keyword representing what he wishes to find, for example, film’ title, episode name, actor name, etc.

The problem is the potentially unwanted program’s displayed search results could show suspicious advertising content. As you see the software’s Privacy Policy claims the information gathered about the user might be used to “recommend content based on your preferences.” Also, its End User License Agreement says the application may show links “to third party sites or content.” Sadly, the same document states the extension’s developers take no responsibility for any third-party content. It might mean no one reviews the advertisements that could be shown by 24stream or its search engine and cannot ensure they will be safe to interact. In other words, some of the potentially unwanted program’s ads could be possibly dangerous, for example, they might redirect to scam websites, sites offering other similarly unreliable applications or even harmful threats, etc.

Under such circumstances, we would not recommend using 24stream if you do not want to encounter any possibly dangerous content accidentally. Users who wish to erase this potentially unwanted program manually could take a look at the instructions prepared by our specialists. They are available at the end of this paragraph. The provided steps will show how to delete the suspicious extension from Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox step by step. Another way to eliminate the application is to use a reliable antimalware tool. Merely pick a piece of software you could trust, install it and perform a full system scan. Once it detects the potentially unwanted program and other possible threats, you should click its provided removal button, and the chosen tool should take care of all detections for you.
