Type: Potentially Unwanted Application

JustMineIt

JustMineIt is presented as an ordinary Google Chrome extension that enables users to mine Monero, which is a popular cryptocurrency, straight from their web browsers. Judging from the total number of users who have installed it directly from the Chrome Web Store, it is not popular software yet, but there is a possibility that this will change in the future because there are thousands of computer users who would not miss a chance to earn extra money. Have you added the JustMineIt extension too? If so, we recommend that you get rid of it. No, it is not a harmful malicious application that can cause serious problems to you, but, unfortunately, it cannot be called reliable software either. Malware analysts working at pcthreat.com say that JustMineIt has all the typical features of a potentially unwanted program, so it has been placed under the potentially unwanted software category. These programs are far from malicious software, but they might still act in an undesirable way, so users should not keep those applications active on their systems. You will not find JustMineIt listed in Control Panel, but since it is an ordinary browser extension, you could delete it quite easily through the add-ons manager. The final paragraph of this report will tell you more about the deletion of this potentially unwanted program.

Users install JustMineIt expecting that they could mine digital currency using their computers’ computing power, but what they do not know when they click the Download button is that this piece of software cannot be trusted fully. The extension allows users to start mining Monero by simply inserting the public key and setting the mining speed, but it is not a decent application, we can assure you. Our researchers say that JustMineIt might provide users with the sponsored content, e.g. start displaying advertisements. It seems that the author of this add-on does not even try to hide this fact because a disturbing sentence can be found in the extension’s Privacy Policy document: “You might be provided with content by using our Website and/or Software. This content may include third parties’ websites, advertisements or links for applications and any other software and/or services (“Third Party Content”) and We do not warrant its quality or authenticity.” What else has been found about this cryptocurrency miner is that it might collect some information about users automatically. It has been observed that it records non-personal details, including the type of the browser used, IP address, search queries, and a bunch of other details. In addition, it might record personally-identifiable information willingly provided by the user. Last but not least, specialists do not think that it is a very good idea to keep JustMineIt active because it might slow down the computer’s speed considerably. This might happen because it will use the computer’s resources to mine cryptocurrency.

Researchers say that some users install JustMineIt consciously from the Chrome Web Store or its official website http://justmineit.com/. Of course, the chances are high that some other people do not know anything about its installation. It is hard to say what alternative distribution methods are used to spread it, but, according to our experienced researchers, this potentially unwanted application should travel bundled with third-party software. Also, it is very likely that users can find advertisements promoting this piece of software on some kind of website and install it on their computers with the single click. If you do not repeat old mistakes, you should not end up with a new undesirable program on your computer ever again, but we have to admit that it is not always that easy to prevent untrustworthy software from entering the system. Therefore, our security specialists highly recommend keeping antimalware software active 24/7.

JustMineIt is not real malware, and, on top of that, it is installed on users’ browsers as an ordinary browser extension, so its removal should not be very complicated. Speaking specifically, you just need to access the add-ons manager, select the undesirable extension, and click the Trash button. If our manual removal guide does not help you to remove JustMineIt, use an automated antimalware scanner. You will clean your system with it in no time.
