Counter for Messenger

Counter for Messenger is a shady application from China, which is supposed to show you statistics in relation to your Messenger. However, we have classified this Google Chrome browser tool as a potentially unwanted program, or PUP for short. Since the official website does not disclose any legal documents, such as EULA and Privacy Policy, it makes all the products coming from the same team quite suspicious. It is possible that this tool collects personal information and all kinds of data about you and your online activities, which can be used to target you with customized advertising or sold to questionable third parties for all you know. Unfortunately, it is quite likely that you did not even install it knowingly, which usually means that there could be malicious threats on your system as well. While this tool may seem to be a useful one for lots of unsuspecting users, we suggest that you remove Counter for Messenger from your browser to stay on the safe side.

This questionable PUP is promoted on its official Chinese site,, along with other browser extensions. As we have said, this site does not share any legal documents, which is a suspicious sign right away. You can also install this tool directly through the Chrome web store, Most likely, the popularity of this extension comes from the "messenger" keyword in its name if you can call over 6,000 installs in two weeks "popular" at all. But obviously, this is not the only way for you to install this suspicious PUP.

It is always much worse when you did not actually knowingly install such a tool and yet find it on your system or in your browser. This can easily happen when you install it via free software bundles. Schemers use such software packages to fool inexperienced users. A bundle can carry all kinds of threats packed together. The installers are usually designed in a way that it may not be obvious for everyone what it contains and what kinds of changes (e.g., browser setting changes) will be implemented. This is the main reason why you should always select the custom or advanced installation option if offered. This could be a way to have a peep into the package and learn what you are actually installing so that you could opt out in time. Some installers does not even let you finish installation if you do not agree to certain additional tools. If you want to avoid such "surprise" packages, you should stay away from dodgy file-sharing, gaming, betting, dating, video streaming, and porn sites. Since it is quite possible that your computer was infected before, too, we suggest that you employ a reliable malware scanner after you delete Counter for Messenger.

This Chinese application offers you statistics with regard to your Messenger program. You can see how much you have chatted with each friend and which ones are ranked highest. You may think that it is a good idea to have such an extension in your browser. But let us tell you that you should never use or keep any suspicious programs on your computer, or else, you could endanger your virtual world. This PUP may, for example, spy on you and gather sensitive information for all you know. There is no legal document available for you to check its third-party or security policies. We advise you to find another free tool that you can actually trust if you want such statistics. We suggest that you remove Counter for Messenger before you may have to face more serious system security issues.

If you have made up your mind about this PUP, it is time to act before it is too late. We have included our guide below for you to use if you want to manually put an end to this extension. Please note, though, that this will not eliminate all other possible threats hiding on your computer. If you want to be certain that you are safe in your virtual world, we recommend that you use a decent malware removal application like SpyHunter. Remember to avoid suspicious sites, clicking on random third-party ads, and to keep your programs updated to prevent further security issues from happening.
