Greatzip Ads

Greatzip Ads are commercial advertisements that will show up on your screen if you have the Greatzip application installed on your computer. Computer security researchers say that this program is a potentially unwanted program. A potentially unwanted program (or PUP) is a type of computer application that is not a computer infection, but it may still have certain features you would not want to deal with. The point is, if you did not want to have this application on-board, it would be a good idea to remove Greatzip right now. If you get rid of the program, Greatzip Ads will disappear, too.

Our research shows that Greatzip is actually a very old PUP. Its official website was registered back in 2012. So it is very likely that back in the days this program used to generate commercial advertisements that used to interfere with user’s browsing habits. Nowadays, however, it is possible that the program still appears in random third-party installers that users download from file-sharing websites. Although Greatzip Ads may not ruin your day any more, the program can still be added to your browser. As a result, your browser may slow down, and you could experience various interferences with your usual web browsing habits.

After a further research, we have found that Greatzip Ads are closely associated with Open Downloader Manager. Open Downloader Manager is yet another potentially unwanted program that users may download on their computers accidentally.

Perhaps you were looking for a program that would help you with your downloading, and you came across this Open Downloader Manager. What’s more, if you downloaded it from a file-sharing website, the chances that this program came with additional apps are only bigger. That is why security experts recommend reading all the steps on the installation wizard. It is very likely that the wizard will inform you about the additional apps, and you will be able to choose whether you want them or not. On the other hand, if you go through the installation automatically, you will miss your chance to deselect unwanted programs.

Of course, now that Greatzip is very old and the program’s functionality is pretty outdated, it cannot cause much harm. But we would like to point out that that if one unwanted application entered your computer, other unwanted apps can do it too. Consequently, the chances of getting exposed to potential security threats grow.

How does that happen? Let’s say a third-party application supports commercial advertisements. Now, where does it get the content for these advertisements? The answer is: From yet another third party. And the problem in this scheme is that this program that displays commercial ads does not check whether they are reliable or not. In other words, such programs are not responsible for the third-party security. Sometimes, those ads could be embedded with links that redirect users to malware-related websites, and then they could be only one click away from a serious malware infection.

Needless to say, it is very unlikely that Greatzip Ads would ever lead you to that kind of conclusion, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Thus, when you remove Greatzip from your computer, make sure you run a full system scan with a licensed antispyware tool to look for other undesirable applications. If any unwanted program is found, remove it at once.

You should also take all the necessary measures to make sure that such programs do not access your system again. Of course, acquiring a powerful antispyware application is the best way to protect your computer from harm. However, your web browsing habits are just as important in keeping your PC safe and clean.

Refrain from downloading programs from file-sharing websites, to avoid the likes of Greatzip Ads. If you must have a new application, be sure to download it from its official website or from official distributors. When you are not sure whether the installer file is safe or not, do not hesitate to scan it with a security program.
