Solo-Bar.net

Solo-Bar.net is a website that will be set as your homepage when you install the Solo-Bar extension on your Chrome browser. This modification may take you by surprise, but it is important to understand that there is nothing malicious about this extension. It does pose particular computer security issues, but most of them are associated with potential exploitation rather than the extension itself. Nevertheless, you should not tolerate this application on your computer any longer. Remove Solo-Bar.net from your browser and then do yourself a favor and scan your system with a reliable security application. You can never know what other programs might be hiding in your system.

In a sense, Solo-Bar.net may look like a nice search engine because it has a minimalistic design and a user-friendly layout. You will not see your most-recently visited websites when this domain is set as your homepage, but not all users require that. So, it is very likely that the homepage will remain changed on quite a few computers because the users will not see this modification as a threat. However, that would not be a good idea because when any program performs unsolicited browser settings modification should not be trusted completely. It most probably means that the program has some secret agenda, and Solo-Bar.net is no exception.

This extension can connect to the Internet without your permission and collect your information. Of course, it cannot steal your logins or banking passwords, but there is a lot of another type of information that adware, freeware, and similar applications can gather. For instance, Solo-Bar.net may find out which websites you frequent and what keywords you usually use. Although this is not personally identifiable information, it could still provide important insights about your likes and preferences. These insights could be used later on by Solo-Bar.net and other third parties.

For the most part, this extension can display third-party ads and modified web search results. Everything is done to promote commercial content that the program displays in order to make some money. That is the main reason this application is developed and distributed. Its creators need to make a financial profit, and they do that each time you click a promoted link. In a sense, there is nothing illegal about that because quite a few websites (and popular ones at that) engage in similar activities. However, it is the content that you need to be wary about.

Solo-Bar.net might be a harmless application by itself, but it is also very limited. It does not review the third-party content it displays, so it is not responsible for the security of those outgoing links you may click. There is always a risk that some of those links could lead to dangerous websites. Of course, most of the time, you will be redirected to some commercial or pay-per-click sites that merely collect online traffic data for marketing purposes. Yet, there is also a possibility to get redirected to a dangerous site that is part of malware distribution network. If that happens, you could be only a click away from a severe infection.

That is why it is important that you terminate Solo-Bar.net as soon as possible. If this application was installed on your computer accidentally (and we think that is the case), you obviously have to delete it. What’s more, the extension probably came bundled with freeware because direct distribution method does not work well. So it means that you have more than one unwanted application on your computer, and you have to remove them all. It also shows how important it is to remain attentive when you download and install new software.

Please refrain from downloading programs from third-party sources if it is possible. It is better to download apps from their official websites because then the possibility of software bundling is a lot smaller.

You should also consider investing in a reliable computer security application that would guard your PC against various intruders from now on. Responsible web browsing and a powerful antispyware application should be enough to protect your system. However, if you need any assistance with that or you have more questions about your computer’s security, feel free to leave us a comment below.
