DataZip

DataZip is a free application used to compress files, but it is classified as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) by computer security specialists. Our researchers have tested it, and they came to the conclusion that using this program might be harmful to your computer. Although it seems like it works as it is supposed to, there are particular activities that worry us. For instance, it can act on its own without your permission, meaning that DataZip might download and install programs on your computer that can infect your system. For more information you can read the article or, if you only want to delete it, look for our instructions below.

DataZip is very similar to the other PUPs like AirZip, Winzipper, 4zip, etc. It is based on popular open source file archiver 7-zip, which was created by Igor Pavlov in 1999. 7-zip is considered a reliable tool and is available in more than 70 languages. While, this PUP is created by Beingjing Zhingmingtengyi Technology Co., Ltd. You cannot find any information about this company on the Internet except the little details given in its website datazip.net. Our researchers believe that it is a fictitious name that might be used by Elex-Technology, a software developer located in Beijing, China; also, it is known to be a primary distributor of potentially unwanted programs. We always advise our users to install software created by reliable developers and given how little we know about Beingjing Zhingmingtengyi Technology you should be cautious about this PUP.

Unfortunately, DataZip has two annoying habits: firstly, it auto-starts with Windows and secondly, it can connect to the Internet without any permission. The second part worries us the most because it connects to datazip.net, xingcloud.com, and soft365.com servers for updates. But that is not all, as soft365.com is known for being used to spread other PUPs or browser hijackers, such as Delta-homes.com, Universalsearches.com, Newsearch123.com, etc. Meaning that it can download more unwanted programs without your consent. Consequently, you will not have any control over this PUP, and if it installs any hijackers, you will also lose control over your browser settings. Moreover, these additional programs can lead you to dangerous computer infections, especially if you click on their displayed third party ads or sponsored links. As you enter such links, your computer might catch Trojans, viruses, worms and other highly harmful infections. It is more likely to happen if your antimalware tool is out of date or you do not have one, so in that case, we recommend you deleting this PUP as fast as you can.

Apparently, DataZip has an official website with a working download button, and the site itself tries to look very legitimate as it even gives you a list of reasons why you should trust it. Some users might fall for that, but this is only one of the three ways how this PUP could have entered your system. The application can also come bundled with other programs that you have downloaded yourself. This probably happened while you were downloading freeware from untrustworthy websites. In most cases, such freeware comes with additional applications that you either can or cannot deselect in installation wizard. However, according to our researchers, there is a high chance that DataZip could have been dropped in your system by some Trojan that your computer was already infected with. In this case, you could see even more suspicious programs that you have not downloaded yourself. Therefore, we advise you to scan your computer properly with a legitimate antimalware tool, because finding and removing such harmful infections can be difficult for users that have not much experience.

Hopefully, this article was helpful, and now you understand why this program is potentially unwanted. If you leave it on your computer, it might install various threats that could cause you a lot of damage. So we urge you not to wait any longer and delete this program from your system. Removing it is quite easy as you can do it via Control Panel. Although, it leaves some files that you will have to find and delete manually. However, do not forget that there might be other infections, especially if your computer was not protected enough. That is why you should check your computer if there are any other threats either manually, if you are experienced user, or automatically with a security tool, which will find and delete them right away. Should you have any questions do not hesitate to leave us a comment.
