Max AdBlock

Maximum AdBlock or more commonly known as Max AdBlock is an old Firefox extension that is supposed to block commercial advertisements, but it actually does completely the opposite. It is a deceptive application, that might still promote unreliable content, and therefore, you should remove it. We say might, because it has not received an update for at least 4 years now. The industry regards Max AdBlock as obsolete, but there is a slight possibility that it might still promote unreliable advertisements. So, this application requires to be discussed in more detail, because users might mistake it for a real Adblock.

To the surprise of our researchers, Max AdBlock is still available for download from Mozilla’s add-ons page. We do not know why, but we assume that its developers might still be receiving contributions from unwary users. The extension has been cleverly disguised as an ad blocking application, because many users like the idea of preventing websites from displaying content they did not ask for. It is said that the ad-blocking rules are managed by the staff of the company that created the app, but the users can add their own rules and exceptions.

Max AdBlock has been developed by SecurityHeroes, which apart from Max AdBlock has not created any applications. The developers have or used to have a website, called Securityheroes.com, but if you click the link, you will be redirected to Reversinglabs.com. The company Reversing Labs is dedicated to developing anti-malware software. However, we do not know whether the two companies are associated or if SecurityHeroes turned legit and morphed into Reversing Labs. So that covers the origins and means of distribution part.

Now, let us discuss how this application works and the reason why you should get rid of it. Max AdBlock is considered obsolete, because it is only supported by very old versions of Firefox. Research determined that the add-on is supported by versions from 3.1.0 to 6.*. Since Firefox updates automatically by default it is unlikely that the application will work on newer versions. Testing has shown that the extension definitely does not work on version 39.0.

It is rather remarkable that someone is keeping this old and obsolete extension alive. We do not know why, but, in any case, that is not important. What is important is the fact that it can still display unreliable commercial advertisements. The danger is that the content promoted by them can be taken at face value. You should not trust these ads and we do not recommend clicking them, because in the worst case scenario the ads might get your computer infected with far more dangerous malicious applications, such as browser hijackers, malicious toolbars, adware, and so on. So, you should definitely delete it as soon as you can.

Now you know that Max AdBlock is not an application its developers claim it to be. Ti does not block ads, but show them. The advertisements are dangerous because they are supplied by unreliable third parties, and there is a slight possibility that this irrelevant application might get your computer infected with malicious software, so if you want to avoid that, you should go to Firefox’s list of extension and click the remove button.
