HighliteApp is a browser add-on that promises to improve your online browsing experience. It is supposed to help you highlight important information you find on the web, just like you would use a marker to highlight text on paper. However, our security research team labels HighliteApp as adware and recommends users to remove this application from their computers. The problem is that the application supports commercial advertisements, and it cannot be held responsible for their third-party content. Hence, due to particular security issues you are advised against keeping HighliteApp on your PC.
On the other hand, we cannot call HighliteApp a computer infection either. It is a potentially unwanted program that cannot do much harm on its own. The main security issue related to such application is the fact that they are highly vulnerable to third-party exploitation. HighliteApp might tell you that it can “make sharing content with friends a breeze,” but it may also expose you to potentially dangerous content if you are not careful about that. Since this program is free, it needs to support itself somehow to survive, and it does that by displaying annoying commercial ads.
Technically, you can download HighliteApp at highliteapp.com. The add-on is compatible with all the major browsers on the market (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer). It is also possible for this program to come bundled with other similar applications, especially if you often download software at third-party file sharing websites. Keep in mind that the best way to avoid potential threats is to download software at official vendor websites only!
Once the setup is complete, HighliteApp auto-starts with Windows and begins collecting data on your web browsing habits – what websites you visit, what search keywords you use most of the time, etc. When it collects enough information to share it with its partners, HighliteApp starts displaying ads and various pop-ups whenever you access supported websites. Such behavior disrupts your online browsing and slows down your browser.
Although HighliteApp does not intend to infect you with malware, such possibility exists because the application is not liable for the security of third-party content. Computer security experts always emphasize that adware programs are NOT SAFE since they can be easily exploited by cybercriminals. Thus, if you can live without HighliteApp, you should get rid of this application right now because your computer security is the most important.
Uninstall HighliteApp via Control Panel, and then remove the extension from Google Chrome manually because sometimes the add-ons do not get deleted automatically. What is more, manual removal may not ensure that all of the potentially unwanted files disappear from your system. Hence, you are strongly recommended to scan your PC with a licensed antimalware application that will identify all the potential threats (if any) and remove them all at once.
