Surf Canyon

Surf Canyon is a browser extension that promises to “unleash the power of search”. It basically means that the application should help you improve your overall online search experience. Needless to say, that Surf Canyon is not a malicious computer infection, but you should be cautious about all the third party content that the application might expose you to. That is not to say that you need to get rid of Surf Canyon immediately – if you find it useful, you can continue utilizing the extension, but a regular computer scan is a good way to make sure that your PC is absolutely safe.

One of the reasons why cannot classify Surf Canyon as a computer infection is the fact that the application has an official website at surfcanyon.com, from where you can download the extension on your computer. There you are told that the application can help you improve your Internet search via Google, Bing, Yahoo! and Craiglist. Surf Canyon can also filter your search results in a way that the relevant information is provided throughout, up until the 100th page of your search results. Finally, just like with any other browser extension, you can actually personalize Surf Canyon, so that the search results would be more related to your overall web browsing habits.

However, it also means that this extension employs cookies to collect and store information on what kind of websites you frequent and what information you usually search for online. That does not mean that Surf Canyon is malicious, but it is obvious that such an application cannot ensure that you will never be attacked by malevolent third parties, that could exploit the information collected by Surf Canyon.

What is more, Surf Canyon is compatible with all main browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome – so it does not matter which browser you use, if you install Surf Canyon on your computer, its application Fast Search will be added to your browser anyway.

Some research show that Surf Canyon can also come bundled with freeware or can be easily download from third party websites, such as Cnet or Softonic. It definitely shows that the application cannot be trusted 100%, especially as it often exposes you to third party content that may potentially be harmful.

To put it simply, having Surf Canyon on your computer does not necessary mean that you will end up infected with malware, but that is definitely a possibility which you cannot ignore. Therefore, to make sure that you avoid any potential threats, remove Surf Canyon from your computer and then scan the system with SpyHunter free scanner. Invest in a licensed antimalware tool if need be.
