Disk Defragmenter

Although most users are able to distinguish between fake system optimizers and defragmenters, rogue defragmenters like Disk Defragmenter make it that much more difficult thanks to its genuine looking UIs. In reality, Disk Defragmenter is nothing more than an empty shell, devoid of any error solving capabilities and only out to fleece consumers out of their hard earned money. Disk Defragmenter will not live up to any of its over embellished promises and will stop at nothing to succeed at its devious task, even causing permanent and irreversible damage to its victim’s PC.

Disk Defragmenter makes use of established forms infection, using surreptitious browser hijacking websites and fake online malware scanners to root its furtive Trojans into PC owners’ systems. Once the Trojan infection roots itself, Disk Defragmenter will reveal its presence to the user via fake security notifications. These bogus security alerts were designed with the explicit purpose of further confusing and panicking the user, as well as for building trust in Disk Defragmenter. Quite obviously none of the following fake alerts generated by Disk Defragmenter should ever enjoy the user’s attention:

"Critical Error!
Damaged hard drive clusters detected. Private data is at risk."

"Critical Error
Hard Drive not found. Missing hard drive."

"Critical Error
RAM memory usage is critically high. RAM memory failure."

"Critical Error
Windows can't find hard disk space. Hard drive error"

"Critical Error!
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file System32496A8300. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware."

"Critical Error
A critical error has occurred while indexing data stored on hard drive. System restart required."

"System Restore
The system has been restored after a critical error. Data integrity and hard drive integrity verification required."

"Activation Reminder
Disk Optimizer Activation
Advanced module activation required to fix detected errors and performance issues. Please purchase Advanced Module license to activate this software and enable all features."

"Low Disk Space
You are running very low disk space on Local Disk (C:)"

"Windows - No Disk
Exception Processing Message 0x0000013"

As a further attack on the system, Disk Defragmenter will not allow the user to launch any executable on his system, and will block all Internet connections. This is done in an effort to prevent the user from downloading or running a program which is able to detect and remove Disk Defragmenter from the system. When the user tries to run any program on his PC, he will be subjected to any of the following fake security notifications:

"Windows detected a hard drive problem.
A hard drive error occurred while starting the application."

Or

"Windows cannot find notepad. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

Or

"Windows detected a hard drive problem.
Scanning for hard drive errors...
Hard drive scan helps to detect and resolve hard drive problems and system performance issues."

When the user closes the above fake notifications, Disk Defragmenter will present the user with the following alert which falsely claims to be able to fix the hard disk:

"Fix Disk
Windows Disk Diagnostics will scan the system to identify performance problems.
Start or Cancel"

Should the user act on this call to action, Disk Defragmenter will emulate a system scan and report that something is wrong with the system by making use of the following fake security notification:

"Windows Disk Diagnostics
Windows detected a hard disk error.
A problem with the hard drive sectors has been detected. It is recommended to download the following certified software to fix the detected hard drive problems. Do you want to download recommended software?"

Do not fall for any of these fake security alerts, as it all forms a part of Disk Defragmenter’s attack on the system and its campaign to extort money out of you. In order to limit the damage posed to your PC, delete Disk Defragmenter at the earliest possible time. Do this by investing in a properly functioning and fully up to date security tool which will not only detect and erase Disk Defragmenter, but also provide future protection against similar rogues.
